Icon painting courses in Helsinki Orthodox Parish are arranged in co-operation with STEP Education.
Basic Icon Painting Course for Beginners
Every Friday starting from September 19th to December 5th, from 17:00 to 20:00
Exceptions: 17.10.
An icon is an embodied prayer. It is created in prayer and for the sake of prayer, driven by love for God and the desire to draw near Him, the Perfect Beauty.
This icon painting course is intended for beginners with no prior experience in iconography. The course will begin with basic exercises to help students confidently hold a brush. We will also practice drawing with pencil on paper to get acquainted with the technique of creating Byzantine-style images through drawing. We will learn the egg tempera technique through small exercises. By the end of the course, each student will paint a small icon on a board.
The course will follow the tradition and iconographic canon, as is customary in icon painting. The work will begin with a short prayer to set the mood for the creative process.
Please note! Students must bring their materials for drawing, including a set of pigments, a sketchbook, brushes, and icon boards. A list of pigments will be sent before the course starts.
The course instructor is iconographer and artist Natalia Pylsy, a graduate of the Moscow Institute for Restoration of Cultural Heritage. The teaching languages are Russian and English.
Cost: The course fee is 120 €/person, which includes tuition and VAT.
Registration: The course accepts max. 10 participants. The course fee is payable upon registration.
